Mistake #3: Not Understanding What’s Actually Covered
Dog insurance sounds simple—pay a monthly fee and the vet bills are covered, right? Not quite.
Many dog owners are surprised (and disappointed) when they find out that basic plans don’t cover everything—especially the things they assumed would be included.
Here’s a common assumption: “Since I have insurance, my dog’s yearly shots and dental cleaning are covered, right?”
Wrong. Most standard pet insurance plans do NOT cover:
- Vaccinations
- Routine checkups
- Spaying or neutering
- Dental cleanings
Unless you pay extra for a wellness add-on, these things will still come out of your pocket—even with insurance.
Why This Matters:
You don’t want to discover the limitations of your plan in the middle of a health emergency. Unfortunately, many people only dig into the details after something goes wrong. That’s when they find out their “covered expenses” aren’t actually covered.
What to Look For in a Policy:
When shopping for a dog insurance plan, read the coverage breakdown carefully. Ask yourself (or the insurer) the following:
Is this plan accident-only or does it also cover illness?
- Accident-only plans are cheaper, but they don’t cover things like infections, cancer, or arthritis.
Does it cover prescription medications?
- Some plans include this, but others charge extra—or don’t cover it at all.
Are diagnostic tests included?
- Make sure advanced tests like X-rays, MRIs, bloodwork, and ultrasounds are covered. These are often the most expensive parts of vet visits.
Can I add a wellness package?
- If you want coverage for routine care (like vaccines, flea meds, and dental cleanings), you’ll need to add a wellness plan. It costs more but can help with predictable, everyday expenses.
Does the plan include specialist care or surgeries?
- Not all insurance covers visits to vet specialists or major surgeries. Make sure your plan doesn’t leave you hanging in serious situations.
Quick Tip
Before you sign up, ask for a sample policy or coverage summary. Many insurers provide this online or by request. It’s the best way to see what’s really included—and what’s not.
